This course covers the basics of alcohol markers - how they work, their pros and cons, the best paper to use them with, how to blend and layer them, and how to fix mistakes you might make. We’ll also go over the basics of color theory, how to build a solid toolkit of supplies, and how to improve and develop your style as an artist.

Hello, My name is Kirsten,

I’m the artist behind Winklebeebee Illustrations, currently working and living in Portland, Oregon. I love making things that are equal parts cute and silly, and experimenting with as many different mediums and projects as I can cram into my studio space. Markers and watercolors are my main illustration mediums (along with digital art, gouache, paint pens, acrylics......)

Aside from that, I also spend a lot of time making laser engraved wood artwork and accessories, and I peddle my wares at local art markets and conventions. Markers are one of my longest standing loves, and I’ve been using them to bring my drawings to life for close to two decades. I like to let color, detail and texture do the storytelling, and I try to create expressive pieces inspired both by everyday life and all the fantastical stories I have running through my head. They’re a versatile and beautiful medium, and I’d love to show some of the ways you can use them in your own work!

Course Content

The course includes 7 modules with over 8 hours and 50+ video lessons and guided exercises. You can pause and replay the videos at any time, allowing you to learn at your own pace. It covers both technical drawing skills and creative mindset training, making it suitable for beginners of all ages, including teens and adults.
The lessons are designed to be taken in order, starting with fundamental concepts and gradually building toward more advanced drawing practice and habit development.

In my course you'll learn:

Module 1:

Introduction

Module 1 focuses on the basics of tools and materials. We’ll discuss the anatomy of a marker, how to store and properly care for your collection, what paper to use, and how to create a solid, simple toolbox that fits within your budget.

Module 2:

Getting started

Module 2 teaches you how to set up your drawing for coloring with markers, as well as what additional supplies can help improve your experience. We’ll discuss how to design strategically, how to prep your paper, and ways to help fix or mitigate mistakes.

Module 3:

Working with Markers

Module 3 allows us to experiment with using markers and how it feels to work with them. You’ll learn about even application, blending, layering, and building up saturation, and start to apply them to your own drawings. Downloadable practice sheets will be available to you, as well as coloring demos to follow along and study.

Module 4:

Basic Color Theory

In Module 4, we’ll break down the basics of color theory and how it can be used to make your drawings more interesting and striking. You’ll learn about how to choose color palettes, how to play with saturation and contrast, and how to use monochromatic colors to help understand color values.

Module 5:

Marker Drawing Styles

Module 5 is all about different styles of art, and the ways you can approach them using markers. Whether this helps you develop your own style or just introduces you to new styles you haven’t tried before, it’s a great way to broaden your scope of what you can accomplish with your own artwork.

Module 6:

Finding your Style

Module 6 is about growing as an artist, now that you have another tool that you can use. We’ll go over how to come up with ideas and inspiration, how to use reference, habits that can improve your skills, and learning how to draw the world around you, even when you’re on the go.

Module 7:

Final Project

Our last module is dedicated to you creating an art piece you’re proud of. I’ll have several prompt ideas to choose from that utilize everything you’ve learned during this course, and you’ll use that to create a final project that showcases what skills you’ve developed.
